SUMMARY:UTJD's Panel on Uyghur Forced Labor
DESCRIPTION:In today’s globalized economy\, businesses and corporations face major challenges related to responsibility within the global production networks and interconnected supply chains in which they operate. Outsourcing labor abroad has become common\, and our daily consumption of goods and services often crosses national borders\, woven into complex multinational legal systems and varying labor practices. While globalization has contributed to economic growth and social development in many countries in the global south\, we must also acknowledge the serious human rights challenges that accompany it. Companies and governments have largely failed to adequately address these challenges. \nIn light of this issue\, the Uyghur Transitional Justice Database (UTJD)\, in collaboration with the Rafto Foundation for Human Rights\, is organizing a panel debate titled “Balancing Green Growth and Human Rights: The Forced Labor Question.” Here\, dialogue will be essential to highlight and find solutions to ethical dilemmas. \nUTJD has recently conducted an in-depth study of how Norwegian companies are complying with Norway’s Transparency Act\, especially concerning responsibility in global supply chains and potential links to Uyghur forced labor. The Transparency Act\, passed by the Ministry of Children and Families\, grants the public the right to question and investigate companies’ ethical sourcing practices\, due diligence processes\, transparency\, and work on fundamental human rights and decent working conditions. \nUTJD will soon publish the report\, *Uyghur Forced Labor in the Norwegian Solar Panel Industry\,* which will be available on website. The report examines the Transparency Act in practice by reaching out to 25 Norwegian solar energy companies to assess their compliance with the law’s requirements. \nThe panel debate will provide a valuable platform for dialogue among experts\, business leaders\, and human rights organizations to discuss the ethical challenges tied to transparent and responsible supply chains\, particularly in the transition to green energy. DESCRIPTION:The Uyghur Transitional Justice Database (UTJD) is joining the 12th Global Assembly of the World Movement for Democracy\, presenting a virtual reality exhibition featuring a 3D model of a concentration camp. This exhibit aims to raise awareness of the atrocities committed by the Chinese government in East Turkistan\, reaching an international audience. \nThe Assembly\, themed “Revitalizing Democracy: Reflection\, Resilience\, and Innovation\,” will gather over 500 democracy advocates from around the world in South Africa for interactive workshops\, discussions\, and networking opportunities. It provides a platform to strengthen cross-border communities\, promote learning\, and spark innovation in the global pursuit of democracy and freedom. \nHeld as South Africa marks 30 years of democracy\, the Global Assembly will honor the country’s democratic journey while examining persistent struggles\, setting the stage for global conversations on democratic resilience. Together\, we will celebrate progress and confront pressing challenges\, such as authoritarianism\, repression\, corruption\, and disinformation\, and look ahead to building stronger global solidarity for a democratic future.

SUMMARY:Academic Freedom + 3D in VR
DESCRIPTION:Scholars at Risk (SAR) in University Oslo will launch their campaign for Rahile Dawut. Rahile Dawut is a prominent Uyghur anthropologist and scholar\, known for her extensive research on Uyghur folklore\, culture\, and religious traditions. A professor at Xinjiang University\, she focused on documenting the rich heritage of Uyghur communities\, including sacred sites\, oral traditions\, and cultural practices. Dawut’s work played a critical role in preserving Uyghur cultural identity amid increasing restrictions in East Turkistan (aka Xinjiang). In 2017\, she disappeared after reportedly being detained by Chinese authorities\, drawing international attention and concerns over the treatment of Uyghur intellectuals. Her disappearance symbolizes the broader repression faced by the Uyghur people and efforts to suppress their cultural expression. \nAs part of its campaign launch\, the Uyghur Transitional Justice Database (UTJD) will unveil a 3D model of a concentration camp in Virtual Reality (VR). This immersive experience aims to bring greater awareness to the conditions inside the camps in East Turkistan\, where Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities have been reportedly detained. By using VR technology\, UTJD offers a powerful tool for advocacy\, allowing viewers to virtually explore the camp’s environment\, highlighting the harsh realities and human rights violations taking place. This initiative seeks to foster global empathy and drive action against the ongoing repression. \n
