Global Responses to Transnational Repression

Bahtiyar Ømer, Project Manager for the Uyghur Transitional Justice Database (UTJD), and Gheyyur Qurban is the Director of the WUC Berlin Office & Spokesperson for World Uyghur Congress (WUC), joined forces to shed light on the escalating transitional repression faced by the Uyghur community.

In a compelling session, Bahtiyar Ømer and Gheyyur Qurban unveiled the findings of an intensive video interviews conducted by UTJD. These interviews, meticulously analyzed and categorized by UTJD experts, revealed the various methods employed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to suppress the Uyghur population abroad.

From mass surveillance and arbitrary detention to cultural erasure and forced labor, the tactics utilized by the CCP paint a grim picture of systematic oppression. Through their collaboration, UTJD and WUC aim to raise awareness about these human rights violations and advocate for justice on behalf of the Uyghur community.

The session served as a call to action, urging the international community to stand in solidarity with the Uyghur people and demand accountability from the Chinese government. By shining a spotlight on the realities faced by the Uyghur community, Bahtiyar Ømer, Gheyyur Qurban, and their colleagues at UTJD and WUC are amplifying the voices of the oppressed and working tirelessly to bring about meaningful change.
