The World Movement for Democracy will host its 12th Global Assembly in Johannesburg, South Africa, from November 20-22, 2024. This event marks a significant moment, as it commemorates 30 years of South Africa’s democracy while focusing on celebrating democratic resilience and innovation. The Assembly aims to foster greater unity and collaborative efforts to counter the global challenges facing democracy today.
More than 500 civil society leaders, political figures, and thought leaders from nearly 100 countries will gather under the theme “Revitalizing Democracy: Resilience, Reflection, and Innovation.” Together, they will reflect on the progress of democratic movements and work towards renewing and strengthening democracy worldwide.
Among participants at this year’s Assembly is the Uyghur Transitional Justice Database (UTJD). UTJD will showcase its groundbreaking use of virtual reality to present a 3D model of a concentration camp, demonstrating how technology can be harnessed to highlight human rights abuses. By sharing this innovative approach, UTJD hopes to inspire other human rights defenders to explore the potential of technology in their advocacy efforts.
This gathering is poised to be a powerful platform for dialogue, collaboration, and innovation in the fight to preserve and promote democratic values globally.
